Trust and flexibility

I did an interview recently, it was on video, and that in itself is an issue, but for another post.

One of the questions I was asked was “what my expectations were.” I had never been asked this question. I was trying to think and after a pause (which made the interviewer a bit uncomfortable) I started talking about trust and flexibility. The best jobs I have had were the ones in which both values were present.

Do your work however you want as long as it is on time and it is high quality. They trusted the work would get done in time and that I was going to deliver quality. That is what trust and flexibility means. None of this breathing down my neck. And this is the optimal work environment.

Having spent these last few years working on trying to build a business, I noticed how unhealthy I was becoming, mentally and physically. Sure I can workout whenever I want, but having an unstructured schedule creates too much procrastination. Being your own cheerleader is only possible for a certain amount of time. Being single, not really having many friends around, and certainly not friends who are available, I felt the need to pay someone to be my coach. Because the mental part of it all is detrimental.
